The next day we were on our own, and we kept busy with lots more sightseeing. We took a short ride on the Maglev train, one of the fastest in the world. It's top speed while we rode was 301 km/h, so somewhere around 200 mph.
Next we walked along Nanjing Road, a huge commercial district in the center of Shanghai with many high-end shops. It was Sunday afternoon, and at least half of Shanghai's 23 million residents were also out shopping with us.
Afterwords we walked along the Bund again, and then made our way to the Former French Concession, the area of Shanghai that was owned by the French prior to 1949. This was a beautiful area with tree-lined streets, a big park, and lots of shops and restaurants.
Emily and I went out again in this area later in the evening, and managed to find ourselves having dinner at a traditional German brauhaus. It had a huge central area with live music; the bier was cold and the food was heavy. Here's Emily with her spaetzle.
We have only one more stop in Shanghai this morning, at a silk carpet factory, and then it's on to the Yangtze River for a four night cruise.
